How to Tell if Your Dog Would Enjoy a Photoshoot

A lot of dog parents assume their dog wouldn’t enjoy a professional photoshoot. Maybe they’re super energetic, maybe they never sit still, or maybe they get distracted easily or seem “too much.”

The truth is, most dogs actually end up having way more fun during a session than their owners expect.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your dog would enjoy a photoshoot, here are a few signs they probably would.

They Love Exploring New Places

If your dog gets excited going on walks, sniffing new trails, or checking out new environments, they’ll likely enjoy a session.

Dog photography sessions aren’t about standing still the entire time. A lot of the experience involves walking, exploring, playing, and letting your dog interact naturally with their surroundings.

For many dogs, it just feels like a fun adventure with their favourite person.

They Love Treats, Toys, or Praise

You’d be surprised how much motivation a few treats and some excitement can create.

Dogs don’t need to be perfectly trained to participate in a session. Many photos happen in quick moments between movement, rewards, and play.

If your dog enjoys food, toys, praise, or attention, that already gives us plenty to work with.

They Have a Big Personality

Goofy, dramatic, curious, chaotic, sweet, independent, the bigger the personality the better.

Dogs with strong personalities often create the most memorable images because their expressions and quirks naturally shine through.

Your dog doesn’t need to act like every “Instagram dog” you see online. The best photos usually happen when dogs are simply themselves.

They Enjoy Spending Time With You

One of the biggest parts of a successful session is your dog feeling safe and connected to their person.

If your dog lights up around you, follows you around, or gets excited doing things together, they’ll likely enjoy the experience more than you think.

Your energy helps shape the session.

They Don’t Need to Be Perfectly Behaved

This is probably the biggest misconception about dog photography.

Your dog does not need flawless obedience to have beautiful photos taken.

Many dogs:

  • get distracted
  • pull on leash
  • struggle with stays
  • need breaks
  • get overexcited
  • need extra patience

Sessions are built around your dog’s comfort level and personality, not unrealistic expectations.

Some Dogs Need a Different Approach and That’s Okay

Not every dog enjoys busy environments or fast-paced situations. Some dogs do better in quiet locations, some need more space, some need slower pacing, and some need time to warm up.

That doesn’t mean they can’t have an amazing session. The experience can always be adjusted to help your dog feel more comfortable and successful.

At the End of the Day…

Most dogs don’t remember whether they “posed correctly.” They remember getting attention, treats, praise, exploring, and spending time with you.

Plus you’ll walk away with memories of who they truly are in this stage of life which matters so much more than perfection.

After what always feels like the longest winter here in Calgary, the shift is finally happening. The snow melts, the air softens, and suddenly everything feels a little lighter again. If you’re anything like most dog moms, this is when you start thinking about getting outside more: longer walks, golden evening light, muddy paws, and those happy post-winter zoomies. It also happens to be one of the best times of year for photos.

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home to get beautiful photos of your dog. In fact, most of the homes I photograph in are completely normal, lived in, a little cluttered, and full of the things that make your dog feel safe. That’s exactly what makes indoor sessions so special. If you’ve ever thought, “My house isn’t nice enough for photos”… this is for you.

Booking a photoshoot for your dog is exciting… until you hit one unexpected question: What am I supposed to wear? Most people overthink this part. They worry about picking the perfect outfit, matching their dog, or somehow “getting it wrong....” but the truth is, what you wear doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, the simpler it is, the better your photos will turn out because at the end of the day, these photos aren’t about your outfit...they’re about your dog.

When your dog is diagnosed with an illness, everything changes. The routines you once took for granted feel heavier. The small moments start to matter more and suddenly, time feels like something you wish you could hold onto just a little tighter. It’s not something any dog parent ever prepares for but it’s in these moments that time means everything and every memory means twice as much as before.
