Summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy Calgary's parks, trails, and green spaces with your dog. But as temperatures rise, it's important to take extra precautions to keep your furry friend safe and comfortable. Dogs can overheat much faster than people, so a little planning can go a long way.

Walk During Cooler Hours

One of the easiest ways to help your dog stay comfortable is to avoid the hottest part of the day. Early mornings and evenings are typically much cooler, making walks more enjoyable and safer for your dog.

Check the Pavement

Sidewalks and pathways can become surprisingly hot during summer. A quick test is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for several seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Bring Plenty of Water

Whether you're heading to the park or going on a longer adventure, always bring fresh water for your dog. Taking regular water breaks helps prevent dehydration and keeps your dog feeling their best. Make sure not to let your dog drink if they are panting heavily. Always make sure their panting slows before giving water to lower the risk of bloat.

Look for Shade

When spending time outdoors, seek out areas with plenty of trees or shaded spaces. Not only does shade help lower your dog's body temperature, but it also provides a comfortable place to rest.

Know the Signs of Overheating

Keep an eye out for signs that your dog may be getting too hot, including:

  • Excessive panting
  • Drooling more than usual
  • Lethargy
  • Difficulty walking
  • Bright red gums

If you notice any of these signs, move your dog to a cool area and offer water only after panting slows.
