How I Edit Out Leashes for Picture-Perfect Dog Portraits

Chantell Schulz • May 30, 2025

When people think of professional dog photography, they often imagine perfectly posed pups running free through fields or sitting calmly in a picturesque park — all off-leash, all flawless. But let’s be real: most dogs aren’t off-leash trained, and in busy places around Calgary, that’s just not safe. The good news? They don’t have to be.

At Renavia Photography, I work with dogs of all energy levels, confidence types, and leash manners — and still deliver stunning, leash-free portraits.

Why I Photograph Dogs With Their Leash On

Whether we’re in Nose Hill, Sandy Beach, or even your own neighborhood, safety always comes first. I never expect your furbaby to be off-leash, especially in new environments or near distractions. And don’t worry if your dog is reactive, nervous, or a total goofball — the leash stays on, and I handle the rest.

The Magic Happens in the Edit

Yes, your dog is on leash the whole time. No, you won’t see it in the final photos.

Using professional editing techniques, I remove leashes in post-production so you get that clean, polished look, without ever compromising your pup’s safety. Whether it's a standard leash, harness, or even a long lead, I work my Photoshop magic to make it all disappear.

Here’s what I can (and often do) remove:

  • Standard leashes
  • Harnesses (in some cases, depending on fur and angle)
  • Hands holding leashes (if you’re nearby for comfort)
  • Long lines used for zoomies or recall training
  • Collars (by request)

Bonus: This Makes Sessions Less Stressful for Your Dog (and You)

Knowing your dog can stay safely leashed allows you to relax and just enjoy the moment. You’re not worrying about a perfect sit-stay or trying to manage off-leash recall. Your dog can be fully themselves — sniffy, silly, sassy, or shy — while I capture all the personality and edit out the gear later.

Ready to Book a Leash-On, Stress-Off Session?

If you've been holding off on booking because you thought your dog needed to be off-leash or perfectly behaved — don't wait any longer. At Renavia Photography, I work with the dog you have, exactly as they are. You keep them safe. I make the leash disappear.

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home to get beautiful photos of your dog. In fact, most of the homes I photograph in are completely normal, lived in, a little cluttered, and full of the things that make your dog feel safe. That’s exactly what makes indoor sessions so special. If you’ve ever thought, “My house isn’t nice enough for photos”… this is for you.

Booking a photoshoot for your dog is exciting… until you hit one unexpected question: What am I supposed to wear? Most people overthink this part. They worry about picking the perfect outfit, matching their dog, or somehow “getting it wrong....” but the truth is, what you wear doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, the simpler it is, the better your photos will turn out because at the end of the day, these photos aren’t about your outfit...they’re about your dog.
