Winter Dog Photoshoots: Why Winter Is Perfect for Dog Photos

Chantell Schulz • January 28, 2026

Winter dog photoshoots don’t get nearly enough love and they’re something more and more dog owners are starting to search for as snow season arrives.

When most people think about booking photos for their dog, they wait for green grass, warm weather, and golden sunsets. Totally fair, but winter deserves a moment, because snow season creates some of the most unique, clean, and emotional images of the entire year.

If you’re on the fence about a winter session, here’s what actually happens during one and why we only have a short window left to capture it.

The Snow Becomes the Star (Without Stealing the Show)

One of the best parts of winter photography? The background does half the work for us.

Snow naturally removes distractions, no patchy grass, no messy backgrounds, no visual clutter. It creates a clean, bright canvas that lets your dog stand out exactly as they are.

Your dog doesn’t get lost in the scene. They are the scene.

Your Dog Will Act… Extra (In the Best Way)

Cold air + snow = personality unlocked. Some dogs turn into snow gremlins with zoomies, snow pounces, wild eyes and all. Others slow down, become more focused, and quietly take everything in. Both are perfect.

Winter strips things back to raw, honest reactions. No forced poses. No expectations. Just your dog doing very dog things.

Darker Dogs Absolutely Thrive in Winter

If you have a black or dark-coated dog, winter is one of the best seasons to photograph them.

Snow acts like a giant natural reflector, bouncing soft light back onto your dog and helping bring out:

  • Facial details
  • Coat texture
  • Expression and depth

Winter images of dark dogs often have stronger contrast and more impact than sessions done in other seasons.

There’s Way Less Chaos Around Us

Winter means quieter locations. Fewer people. Fewer dogs. Less noise.

That calmer environment is a huge win especially for dogs who are nervous, reactive, or just need a bit more space to settle in.

Sessions feel slower, more intentional, and more tailored to your dog’s comfort level.

Your Dog Does Not Need to Be “Well Trained”

Let’s clear this up.

Your dog does not need to sit perfectly, stay still, or listen 100% of the time.

Dogs can:

  • Stay on leash
  • Sniff
  • Take breaks
  • Move at their own pace

Winter sessions are guided, flexible, and always centered around what your dog needs in that moment.

Winter Sessions Are Short, Thoughtful, and Warm Enough

Winter shoots are designed with the cold in mind.

That means:

  • Short bursts of movement
  • Plenty of check-ins
  • Adjusting pace based on energy and comfort

No one is standing around freezing. We work efficiently, intentionally, and with your dog’s wellbeing as the priority.

We Only Have a Few Months Left of Snow Season

Snow season doesn’t last forever.

Here in Calgary, nature’s winter wonderland is fleeting. Once the snow melts, it’s gone and so is the opportunity for this specific look and feeling.

If winter photos have been sitting on your “maybe someday” list, this is that nudge.

There are only a few more months left to capture:

  • Crisp white landscapes
  • Soft winter light
  • That quiet, magical snow season mood

Ready to Book a Winter Dog Photoshoot?

Snow season is short, and winter sessions are limited. If you’ve been dreaming about clean, timeless images that capture your dog’s personality in nature’s winter wonderland, now is the time to do it—before the snow melts away.

You don’t need a perfectly trained dog. You don’t need to know how to pose. You just need to show up with your dog.

Book your winter dog photoshoot here  and let’s capture your dog exactly as they are, while snow season is still here.

One of the biggest worries I hear from dog owners is, “What if my dog doesn’t cooperate?” Maybe they don’t have the best recall. Maybe they can’t sit still for more than two seconds. Maybe they’re easily distracted by squirrels, people, or literally anything happening around them. The good news? Your dog does not need to be perfectly trained for a photography session.

Fall is one of my favourite times of year for dog photography. The changing leaves, warm golden light, and beautiful colours make the perfect backdrop for photos that feel cozy, colourful, and full of personality. This year, I’ll be offering both fall mini sessions and full dog photography sessions throughout Calgary.

Choosing the right location can make a big difference in your dog's photos. While every park has something unique to offer, there are a few things I always look for before recommending a spot. My goal is to find a location that not only looks beautiful but also helps your dog feel comfortable throughout the session.

Family photos with your dog are some of the most meaningful images you'll ever have. While they may look effortless, there's a lot happening behind the scenes to make sure everyone looks their best...including your pup. Here are a few ways I create beautiful family portraits while keeping the session relaxed and enjoyable.

Summer is one of my favourite seasons for dog photography. The lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and long evenings create beautiful backdrops, but they can also make editing a little more challenging. It's easy to get carried away trying to make colours pop, only to end up with images that don't look natural. Here are five common summer editing mistakes I see and how I avoid them.

If you've ever wondered why I recommend evening sessions, the answer is simple: golden hour helps me create beautiful photos of your dog. Golden hour is the period just before sunset when the light becomes softer, warmer, and more flattering. Unlike the harsh midday sun, it creates a natural glow that helps your dog look their best.

Summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy Calgary's parks, trails, and green spaces with your dog. But as temperatures rise, it's important to take extra precautions to keep your furry friend safe and comfortable. Dogs can overheat much faster than people, so a little planning can go a long way.

Having multiple dogs means more personalities, more memories, and a whole lot more love. But one question I get often is: “Can you actually get all of my dogs looking at the camera at the same time?” The answer? Absolutely. Photographing multiple dogs takes patience, preparation, and a little bit of strategy, but capturing your whole pack together is one of my favourite parts of a session.

Graduation season is here! It's a time filled with excitement, change, and the feeling that one chapter is ending while another is just beginning. For many dog moms and grads, there’s one special face that has been there through it all: their dog. The late nights studying, the stressful moments, the exciting wins, and all the everyday memories in between, your dog has been part of this chapter too. So why not celebrate this milestone with the one who has been by your side?

When people think of Father's Day, they usually think of dads and their children, but there's another group of dads who deserve some recognition too: dog dads. They're the ones waking up early for walks, carrying extra treats in their pockets, and somehow ending up with hundreds of photos of their dog on their phone. Whether they admit it or not, dog dads play a huge role in their pup's life. This Father's Day, let's celebrate the dog dads who show up every day for their four-legged best friends.
