How to Photograph Big Dogs with Confidence

October 23, 2025

When most people picture a professional dog photoshoot, they imagine a big dog charging through tall grass or posing proudly against a mountain backdrop and honestly, they’re not wrong. However, there’s an art to photographing large breeds that goes beyond their size.

As an Alberta dog photographer, I’ve met my fair share of gentle giants, from goofy Great Danes to soulful Shepherds, and every one of them has its own kind of magic. Big dogs bring presence, personality, and sometimes a little chaos (in the best way!).

Here’s how I make sure every large dog looks as majestic, confident, and lovable as they truly are.

1. Finding the Perfect Space for Big Dogs

Big dogs need room to shine. When choosing a location, I look for open spaces that give them freedom to move comfortably, whether it’s a field, riverside trail, or quiet park.

These wider settings let me capture their full body and movement without feeling cramped or cutting off those long tails and paws. I also pay close attention to composition, framing each photo so your dog feels balanced in the space,  powerful, yet grounded.

The result? Photos that highlight their size and spirit, not just their scale.

2. Working With Their Energy

Every large dog has their own kind of energy. Some are calm and regal; others bounce around like puppies who never realized how big they got.

Before I start photographing, I spend a few minutes letting them explore and get comfortable. This helps them relax (and gives me a sense of how to work with their personality).

For active dogs, I plan moments that let them move with trotting, running, or playing with their pawrent. For calmer dogs, I focus on quieter poses that bring out their strength and soulful eyes.

No matter their pace, my goal is to make the session feel natural and fun, never forced.

3. The Power of Angles

Angles make all the difference with big breeds. Shooting from slightly below their eye level emphasizes their strong posture and confident presence.

For some dogs, a sitting or lying pose helps balance their frame and makes them feel more relaxed. If their pawrent joins in, sitting or kneeling beside them creates scale and connection without taking attention away from the star of the show.

Every detail matters: a soft breeze in their fur, a tilted head, a gentle expression. Those are the moments that bring out the heart behind the size.

4. Keeping Comfort in Mind

Big dogs may look strong, but they still need breaks (especially during warm weather). I plan slower transitions and make sure they’re never overwhelmed.

Sessions move at their pace, whether that means extra time for sniffing, a few play breaks, or pausing to soak up attention from their humans. When your dog feels comfortable and happy, their real personality shines through every frame.

5. Why Large Dogs Photograph So Beautifully

There’s something undeniably special about photographing big dogs. Their expressions are bold, their features striking, and their personalities fill the frame in a way that’s impossible to ignore.

Through careful posing, lighting, and editing, I highlight their texture, detail, and emotion from the sparkle in their eyes to that proud, powerful stance that says it all.

Each photo tells a story that captures the heart of your gentle giant, not just their size, but their soul.

6. Why Book a Professional Dog Photographer for Big Dogs

Big dogs can be tricky to photograph at home as they move quickly, take up space, and don’t always sit still when you want them to. A professional pet photographer knows how to work with their scale, personality, and comfort level to bring out their best side.

When you book a large dog photoshoot in Calgary, you’re not just getting portraits; you’re getting artwork that reflects your dog’s power, playfulness, and individuality.

Final Thoughts

No dog is too big for a beautiful photoshoot. Whether your furbaby is 70 pounds of cuddles or 120 pounds of zoomies, they deserve photos that celebrate who they are, goofy grins, drool and all.
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to book your big dog’s photoshoot, this is your sign.

Let’s plan your dog’s next adventure, one that’s full of space, spirit, and unforgettable moments.

After what always feels like the longest winter here in Calgary, the shift is finally happening. The snow melts, the air softens, and suddenly everything feels a little lighter again. If you’re anything like most dog moms, this is when you start thinking about getting outside more: longer walks, golden evening light, muddy paws, and those happy post-winter zoomies. It also happens to be one of the best times of year for photos.

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home to get beautiful photos of your dog. In fact, most of the homes I photograph in are completely normal, lived in, a little cluttered, and full of the things that make your dog feel safe. That’s exactly what makes indoor sessions so special. If you’ve ever thought, “My house isn’t nice enough for photos”… this is for you.

Booking a photoshoot for your dog is exciting… until you hit one unexpected question: What am I supposed to wear? Most people overthink this part. They worry about picking the perfect outfit, matching their dog, or somehow “getting it wrong....” but the truth is, what you wear doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, the simpler it is, the better your photos will turn out because at the end of the day, these photos aren’t about your outfit...they’re about your dog.

When your dog is diagnosed with an illness, everything changes. The routines you once took for granted feel heavier. The small moments start to matter more and suddenly, time feels like something you wish you could hold onto just a little tighter. It’s not something any dog parent ever prepares for but it’s in these moments that time means everything and every memory means twice as much as before.

If you’ve ever thought about booking photos for your dog, chances are this question has crossed your mind: Do they need to be trained first? Here’s the truth: your dog doesn’t need to be trained to be photographed beautifully.
