How to Choose the Right Photographer for Your Dog

So, you’ve decided your furbaby deserves their own photoshoot...amazing choice! But now you’re realizing there are a lot of photographers out there, and you’re wondering how to pick the right one. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here are a few things to look for (and questions to ask) before booking your dog’s big day.

1. Find someone who actually understands dogs

This one might sound obvious, but trust me...it’s huge. A great dog photographer knows how to read your pup’s body language, understands when to give them a break, and can adapt if things don’t go as planned (because, let’s be real, dogs have their own ideas sometimes).

If your dog is shy, wiggly, or totally obsessed with sniffing everything, the right photographer won’t see that as a problem...they’ll see it as personality. That’s how the best photos happen.

2. Look at more than just pretty pictures

Every photographer has a style. Some love bright, punchy colours. Others prefer dark and moody tones. The key is to find a style that feels like your dog.

When scrolling through portfolios, ask yourself: “Can I picture my pup in these photos?” You want images that show off their personality...whether that’s goofy, calm, confident, or a mix of all three.

3. Pay attention to the dogs in their photos

When you’re scrolling through a photographer’s portfolio, don’t just look at the backgrounds or lighting...look at the dogs.

Do they look happy and relaxed? Or do they seem tense with ears pinned, wide-eyed, or lip-licking? Those little details say a lot about how comfortable the dogs felt during their sessions.

A great dog photographer knows how to keep things calm and fun, even when a pup is feeling unsure. That’s how you get photos full of real joy and genuine personality.

4. Make sure their packages fit what you’re looking for

Everyone offers something a little different...from the number of photos to how they’re delivered. Think about what you want out of the experience.

Do you want a few wall-worthy portraits, or a full gallery of your dog’s personality in every angle? Some photographers offer proofs or full galleries to choose from, while others (like me!) deliver a curated set of fully edited images that capture your dog at their absolute best.

And don’t be afraid to ask what’s included: travel, editing, leash removal, or black-and-white versions might all be part of the package!

5. Trust your gut

At the end of the day, you want to work with someone who feels right. Someone you trust to be patient, kind, and just as obsessed with your furbaby as you are.

If you find yourself smiling while reading their website or feeling that little spark when you see their photos...that’s your sign.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right photographer for your dog isn’t just about beautiful photos...it’s about finding someone who truly sees your pup for who they are. The right photographer will guide your dog into poses that bring out their natural expressions and energy, while keeping the whole experience fun and stress-free.

Because it’s not about forcing perfect shots...it’s about capturing real moments, genuine personality, and the little quirks that make your furbaby one of a kind.

If you’re looking for a Calgary-based dog photographer who celebrates every tail wag, head tilt, and goofy grin...I’d love to meet your pup. You can learn more about sessions or get in touch [here].

Every dog walks into a photoshoot with their own personality and that matters far more than how well they sit, stay, or look at the camera. Before I ever lift my camera, I’m paying attention to who your dog is. Their body language, their energy, how they move through the space, it all matters. That’s what shapes the entire session. Here are some of the personalities I see most often and what they tell me as a dog photographer.

When most people picture a professional dog photoshoot, they imagine a big dog charging through tall grass or posing proudly against a mountain backdrop and honestly, they’re not wrong. However, there’s an art to photographing large breeds that goes beyond their size. As an Alberta dog photographer, I’ve met my fair share of gentle giants, from goofy Great Danes to soulful Shepherds, and every one of them has its own kind of magic. Big dogs bring presence, personality, and sometimes a little chaos (in the best way!). Here’s how I make sure every large dog looks as majestic, confident, and lovable as they truly are.
