Dog Friendly Places To Visit

As a proud dog mom, I’m always asking: “Can I bring my dog?” And if the answer is no, I’m usually not that interested. If you're the same way, this blog is your go-to list of dog-friendly chain stores and restaurants in Alberta, the places where you don’t have to leave your pup at home or in the car. Whether you're running errands or planning a patio date, here’s where dogs are welcome too.

Dog Friendly Stores

These chain stores are known to allow dogs in many Alberta locations (though it never hurts to call ahead):

  • Home Depot – Leashed dogs are welcome in most Alberta locations.
  • Canadian Tire – Many locations allow dogs, especially in garden centres.
  • Staples – Dogs are allowed at some locations, particularly in walkable city areas.
  • Michael’s – Known for being pet-friendly across Canada!
  • Bass Pro Shops / Cabela’s – Outdoor gear heaven—and yes, dogs are allowed inside.
  • PetSmart / Petland – Obvious, but still great for a fun outing.
  • Mark’s / Sport Chek – Many allow dogs (especially smaller ones in carts or carriers).
  • HomeSense / Winners – Some Alberta locations are totally fine with dogs on leash (especially in urban areas).

Dog Friendly Restaurants & Patios

While dogs can’t come inside food establishments in Alberta (thanks, health codes), there are plenty of patios that welcome dogs, and some even bring out treats or water bowls.

Dog Friendly Quick Stops

Sometimes you’re just popping out for a minute, and leaving your pup behind feels unnecessary (and honestly, rude). These are the spots where your dog can tag along while you check things off your to-do list.

  • Garden Centres – Most (like Greengate, Golden Acre) allow leashed pups.
  • Farmers' Markets – Outdoor ones like the Calgary Farmers’ Market South and Bountiful Market in Edmonton often allow dogs.
  • Banks (select branches) – Some ATB and RBC branches allow dogs while you do quick errands.

A Few Tips Before You Go

  • Always keep your dog leashed and under control.
  • Bring poop bags and water just in case.
  • Be respectful of others as not everyone loves dogs (weird, I know).
  • Some chains leave it up to individual managers, so when in doubt, give a quick call.

Your dog is family so why not take them everywhere you can?
From running errands to enjoying a sunny brunch, there are so many places in Alberta that welcome dogs with open paws. Save this list for the next time you're planning a day out with your pup!

Every dog walks into a photoshoot with their own personality and that matters far more than how well they sit, stay, or look at the camera. Before I ever lift my camera, I’m paying attention to who your dog is. Their body language, their energy, how they move through the space, it all matters. That’s what shapes the entire session. Here are some of the personalities I see most often and what they tell me as a dog photographer.

When you picture your dog’s photoshoot, you might imagine them running leash-free, fur flying, pure joy in motion. Here’s the truth: most of the dogs I photograph stay on leash the entire time, and you’d never even know it from the final photos. Here’s why that leash is actually the secret to those relaxed, natural images you love:

When most people picture a professional dog photoshoot, they imagine a big dog charging through tall grass or posing proudly against a mountain backdrop and honestly, they’re not wrong. However, there’s an art to photographing large breeds that goes beyond their size. As an Alberta dog photographer, I’ve met my fair share of gentle giants, from goofy Great Danes to soulful Shepherds, and every one of them has its own kind of magic. Big dogs bring presence, personality, and sometimes a little chaos (in the best way!). Here’s how I make sure every large dog looks as majestic, confident, and lovable as they truly are.
