In fact, most of the homes I photograph in are completely normal, lived in, a little cluttered, and full of the things that make your dog feel safe. That’s exactly what makes indoor sessions so special.

If you’ve ever wondered how Renavia Photography came to life… it didn’t start with a camera...It started with a dog.

It All Began With Peanuts

I’ve loved dogs for as long as I can remember...honestly, since I could walk. Some of my earliest memories are filled with dog snuggles, training in 4h, learning tricks, going for walks, and lots more. Our first family dog, Peanuts, wasn’t just a pet… he was part of everything. He was there in the background of childhood moments that, at the time, felt small...but looking back now, meant everything and that’s where it started.

It's not where photography started but the understanding that dogs aren’t “just dogs.” They’re a part of your life story.

Where Photography Entered the Picture

I didn’t pick up a camera because I thought I’d turn it into a business one day. I started in Grade 7 as a hobby.

At the time, it was just curiosity, learning, experimenting, figuring things out as I went, but something about it stuck. I loved being able to freeze a moment...something that would’ve otherwise passed by without a second thought.

Still, back then, photography and dogs were two separate parts of my life.

I had no idea they would eventually be combined.

This was my first photo of our family dog Shyloh with my new DSLR I had bought.

The Moment It All Came Together

About two years ago, everything clicked. Dogs had always been at the center of my world. Photography had always been something I loved and I realized…why not combine the two?

That’s when I started dog photography and I haven’t looked back since. The truth is, photographing dogs isn’t just about getting a “nice photo.”....it’s about capturing who they are. The little expressions, the personality, the things you don’t even realize you’ll miss one day....that’s what matters and that's what I get to capture.

The Name “Renavia” (And How It Actually Happened)

The name Renavia has a story of its own, and it’s probably not what you’d expect. I knew I wanted something personal, and my middle name, Renae, felt like the right place to start...but on its own, it didn’t feel complete. So, like most people do when they’re stuck, I looked around the room and that’s when I saw a Nivea lotion bottle. For some reason, it just worked for me. Renae and Nivea turned into “Renavea,” and while I loved the idea, I wanted the spelling to feel simpler and easier to read. Changing the “e” to an “i” gave me “Renavia,” and that was it. No big strategy, just something that felt right in the moment. Also my name first name "Chantell" is hard for people to spell correctly so we had to choose something else haha.

Today, Renavia Photography is about more than just photos, it's about celebrating your dog for who they are, their personality and flaws, everything that makes them well them. I'm not big on presets and slapping a photo together as fast as possible. I edit each photo like an art piece and treat it as such. If you're the same way, this blog is your go-to list of dog-friendly chain stores and restaurants in Alberta , the places where you don’t have to leave your pup at home or in the car. Whether you're running errands or planning a patio date, here’s where dogs are welcome too.

Dog Friendly Stores

These chain stores are known to allow dogs in many Alberta locations (though it never hurts to call ahead):

Home Depot – Leashed dogs are welcome in most Alberta locations.
Canadian Tire – Many locations allow dogs, especially in garden centres.
Staples – Dogs are allowed at some locations, particularly in walkable city areas.
Michael’s – Known for being pet-friendly across Canada!
Bass Pro Shops / Cabela’s – Outdoor gear heaven—and yes, dogs are allowed inside.
PetSmart / Petland – Obvious, but still great for a fun outing.

Blanco Cantina (Calgary + Edmonton) – Dogs are welcome outside, with staff who love them.
OEB Breakfast Co. – Patios are pet-friendly at many locations.
Local Public Eatery – Several locations across Alberta with dog-welcoming patios.
Earls / Joey / Cactus Club – Most Alberta patios allow dogs as long as they stay outside the fenced area (call ahead to check the setup).

Dog Friendly Quick Stops

Sometimes you’re just popping out for a minute, and leaving your pup behind feels unnecessary (and honestly, rude). These are the spots where your dog can tag along while you check things off your to-do list.

Garden Centres – Most (like Greengate, Golden Acre) allow leashed pups.
Farmers' Markets – Outdoor ones like the Calgary Farmers’ Market South and Bountiful Market in Edmonton often allow dogs.

Let’s be real...most dogs aren’t exactly known for sitting still. Yet, time after time, I hear the same worry from loving dog moms:

“I’d love to book a session, but my dog’s way too hyper.”
“She never listens outside the house.”
“He won’t sit for more than a second!”

Sound familiar? If this is you, take a breath. You’re not alone, and no, your furbaby does not need to be perfectly behaved to get stunning photos.

Here’s the truth: Most of the dogs I photograph don’t sit still.

It’s part of my job to work with their energy and not against it. I’ve photographed the jumpers, the sniffers, the zoomers, the barkers, and the “what is sit?” crowd… and they’ve all ended up with frame-worthy photos that truly capture who they are.

This isn’t studio work with stiff poses and high-pressure commands. This is real life, outdoors, full of movement, curiosity, and play and that’s what makes the photos feel so honest and joyful.

So what happens when your dog doesn’t sit still?

The quiet, beautiful chapter they never prepare you for.

There’s a moment...sometimes small, sometimes impossible to ignore... when you realize your dog is slowing down.

Maybe they don’t jump into the car like they used to, maybe their zoomies have turned into slow tail wags, or perhaps it’s the white fur creeping across their muzzle. No one prepares you for this part of it: The senior dog chapter. It’s quieter, gentler, sometimes frustrating, always emotional, and yet, it might be the most deeply connected season you’ll ever share.

They don't need as much — but they need you more.

You stop measuring your dog’s joy by how far they can hike or how many tricks they can do. Suddenly, it's about making them comfortable, giving them their favourite spot on the couch, slowing your own pace so they can keep up, being patient on stairs, and carrying them when needed. It’s not flashy, but it’s full of love.

You're not alone if you're grieving while they're still here.

There's a unique grief that comes with senior dogs: loving them deeply while knowing the time ahead is shorter than the time behind. It doesn’t mean you’re morbid, it means you love them with your whole heart. That ache? It's proof of just how bonded you are.

Why now is the time for photos.

Not because you're losing them, but because you're loving them differently now. This season deserves to be remembered:
The gentle nuzzles, the slow blinks, the way they still find their way to your feet even if it takes a little longer.

What I Notice About Your Dog That You Might Not See

As a dog photographer, I get to meet pups from every walk of life: the bold and bouncy, the shy and gentle, the stubborn goofballs, and the soulful old souls. Every time, without fail, I catch something that even the most devoted dog moms don’t always see:

The way their pup leans just a little closer when they’re unsure.

The soft squint in their eyes when they’re happy.

The proud little puff of their chest when they feel confident.

That split-second moment when they look at you like you’re their whole world.

These aren’t things you can pose or plan, but I live for them.

You see them every day, I see them frozen in time.

When you spend every day with your dog, it’s easy to miss the tiny shifts in expression or the way their personality shows up in movement. My job is to slow that all down and offer an outside perspective that says: Look at how beautiful they are when they’re just being themselves.

Some dogs aren’t comfortable holding a sit. Some would rather sniff than pose, and some are too nervous to look directly at the camera. That’s okay, I don’t need them to perform because what I’m watching for are the things you’ve grown so used to, you might not even realize how special they are.

I notice...

The twitch of their ears when they hear your voice.
How their body relaxes when they’re near you.
The way their tail moves faster when I say your dog-mom nickname for them.
That head tilt they only do when they’re really listening.
The joy in their eyes that says, “I’m safe. I’m home.”

These are the moments I capture and they’re the reason your gallery might make you tear up (and not just because of the cute head tilts).

At home, your dog is relaxed. Playful. Maybe a little goofy. You know their quirks, their routines, and the way they light up your life without even trying.

But outside? Things shift. They might get overwhelmed. Overexcited or suddenly unsure of everything.

If you’ve ever thought, “This isn’t the dog I know…” You’re not alone. And more importantly, your dog isn’t doing anything wrong.

What I See Through the Lens

As a dog photographer, I’ve met dogs who arrive at sessions full of zoomies and sass, and others who need space, quiet, and time. Some don’t want to sit, some don’t want to stop sniffing, and some want to stay tucked beside their person, unsure of what to make of it all.

And the thing is… I love them all. I don’t look for the “perfect pose.” I’m looking for the tiny moments that make your dog your dog. The head tilts. The spark in their eye when they spot their favourite treat. The softness that comes when they finally feel safe enough to just be.

Let’s be honest...they don’t stay tiny for long. Those oversized ears, goofy stumbles, and teethy grins disappear fast .

The Challenge of Group Shots

Dogs, like people, have their own moods and energy levels. Getting all pups to look at the camera, sit still, or show their best expression at the same time can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. It takes patience, timing, and a bit of magic to get that perfect group shot.

How I Capture Multiple Dogs Together

1. The Classic Group Shot:
Whenever possible, I’ll get all the dogs posing together in a single frame. This creates a natural, authentic moment that perfectly showcases their relationship.

2. The Composite Technique:
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, one or more dogs may not look their best in the group shot. Maybe one’s eyes are closed, or they’re distracted. That’s when I use a technique called a composite, where I combine several photos of each dog into one flawless image.

This way, every dog shines in the final picture without losing the feeling of being together.

Love is love even when it has fur:
The depth and emotional connection between you and your furbaby is unlike any other. The care, the cuddles, the unwavering love-it's profound and real, woven into every single moment you share together.

Caretaking is caretaking, no matter the species:
You don't just manage vet appointments, feeding schedules, and daily exercise routines- you navigate the challenges of reactive behaviours, anxiety, and training with dedication and patience. Whether you're calming a fearful dog or building one's confidence, it's a full-time job.

Sacrifices and sleepless nights:
